Being an older band, it definitely has a retro sound going on. The first track just eases you into it with an almost carribean sound before the vocals kick in. The track is something to sway along to and more than likely a track where your parents are at a friends place getting pissed and grooving along to the song talking about all the other Wire songs they like. I gotta say this track sets up the album nicely, with the vocals being very cool.
The post-punk influence is evident on the track "Two Minutes". Unfortunately, it's almost a throwaway track that serves very little purpose on the album, as the song is so different to anything else that it ruins the flow from the first three tracks and the fifth, which is back to a similar sound of the first three. The album continues on a similar path until "Moreover". It leaves the slower swaying songs for a messy slightly heavier rock sound, one though that is still held together that its doesn't sound bad at all. This sound only lasts a few tracks as it moves on to a very slow and serious song, "Down to This". It starts seriously, but late in the track, it returns to the sway-like qualities of the earlier songs. The last two tracks are for me the best on the album, they give off a serious side that isn't that evident on the other tracks. I'm not saying a song can't be good if it's not serious, but these tracks seem to have more meaning than a bunch of songs that I think would only fit the middle aged English house party.
I must say I liked a few of the songs but nothing on this album stands out apart from "Two Minutes", which isn't in a positive light. The album to me doesn't flow whatsoever, and it's almost like they made a bunch of songs and did a lucky dip on where tracks ended up. An album of the messy rock tracks similar to the last two tracks would for me make it a much more enjoyable album and one I would think I'd like much more than this effort.
This album is a MESS.
